About Me

Everything someone new should know about Maya.

Maya

Age 10 · born May 14, 2016 · she/her

Hi! I'm Maya. I love horses, drawing, and swimming. Loud rooms and sudden changes are hard for me. A heads-up before switching activities helps a lot, and sometimes I use my tablet to talk. If I'm upset, a quiet spot and some time usually help me feel better.

My strengths

  • Remembers amazing details about animals, especially horses
  • Draws her own comics with characters and stories
  • Kind to younger kids; notices when someone is sad
  • Strong swimmer (finished Level 4 this summer)
  • Follows her visual schedule on her own
  • Getting better at asking for a break with words

Loves

  • Horses (especially Clydesdales)
  • Drawing and comics
  • Swimming
  • Minecraft
  • Mac and cheese
  • Her cat, Biscuit

Not a fan of

  • Surprise fire drills
  • Mushy textures
  • Crowded hallways

Communication

Speaking + AAC

Maya talks in full sentences most of the time. When she's overwhelmed, words get hard — she uses her AAC app (on her tablet) or her break card. Give her time to answer; she's thinking.

What helps

  • Drawing horses
  • Counting breaths with a visual timer
  • Five-minute heads-up before transitions

Sensory needs

  • Noise-reducing headphones in loud places (cafeteria, assemblies)
  • Soft, tag-free clothes
  • Movement breaks every 30–40 minutes
  • Chewy necklace when concentrating

Things that are hard

  • Sudden changes in plans
  • Loud, echoey rooms
  • Being rushed during transitions
  • Scratchy fabrics and clothing tags
  • Long stretches of writing

Daily life

  • Mornings go best with the picture checklist on the fridge
  • Tries new foods on a separate plate, not mixed in
  • Bedtime is 8:30, with a story and dim lights
  • Can make her own snack and pack her school bag
  • May not hear her name when she's focused; a light tap on the shoulder works
